Homemade Dinner Rolls
One of my favourite parts of holidays as a child were these Lucious dinner rolls my mom would make when company came over. She would pile them high in a bread bowl and let the guests tear them apart.
Just the idea of the flaky and soft dough, still warm from the oven brings back the smells and all the feelings of holiday time.
This is a very simple recipe that anyone can make. You don’t even need a stand mixer. I pulled mine out but you can do this with a large bowl and a wooden spoon.
Homemade Dinner Rolls
Ingredients:
1 cup of warm milk
2 tsp of yeast
4 tsp of granulated sugar
1 egg
1/2 cup of melted butter
1 tsp of salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
Directions:
Grab a large mixing bowl and add 1 cup of warm milk, 2 tsp of yeast, and 2 tsp of granulated sugar. Mix using a whisk and let sit for 5 minutes—so the yeast activates.
To the milk mixture, whisk in 1 egg, 1/2 cup of melted butter, 2 more tsp of granulated sugar, and 1 tsp of salt.
Mix in 3 cups of flour until a shaggy dough forms.
Transfer back to the bowl, cover with a dish towel, and place somewhere warm for an hour. It should double in size! Often, I will turn my oven on to 200 at the beginning of the process and then turn it off and let the dough rise in the oven as it’s cooling.
Once it’s risen, punch down the dough and transfer to a clean surface again.
Cut the dough into 8-10 pieces. Roll them into little balls of dough, and place in a buttered baking dish
Cover the baking dish with a towel and place on top of the oven while it preheats to 350. Let them sit there for about 30 minutes, or until they get nice and puffy.
Bake on 350 for 20 minutes they should be golden on top!
Enjoy fresh out of the oven with a lovely smear of salted butter!!
Let’s start a new tradition and bring back the big bread basket of freshly baked dinner rolls. These are delicious and full of nostalgia. Let me know if you tried this recipe. You are going to love it.
