What to bring when you’re invited to someone’s cottage

Naturally, when we are invited to spend a weekend at someone’s house, we don’t want to show up empty handed. My red flag is that I only want to show up with the BEST (insert anything here) to the point that I become paralyzed in the decision fatigue of what exactly I should bring. I thought I would round up some thoughtful ideas and just leave them here in case you suffer from the same plight….

Something for breakfast

1) Granola + yogurt + berries - You can buy your granola or try any of of my recipes (they are alll so great but lately this is my go to because it’s higher in protein)

2) Coffee from your favourite local coffee shop - you could go one step further and bundle it with a vintage inspired grinder and these super cute mugs that could go out to the deck or down to the dock.

3) I’m a big fan of frozen croissants - grab a few flavours for the freezer and put them out on a parchment lined baking sheet the night before so they are ready to be popped into the oven and baked up fresh in the morning!

4) Freshly baked muffins! How about these summer classics or these muffins too, are a huge crowd pleaser!

5) This waffle maker was gifted to us and it’s now something I pull out each time we have a ‘special’ breakfast. The waffles are perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and pillowy on the inside. Pair this with a box of Bisquick and some nice maple syrup for a winning and appreciated gesture.

Something for snacks or dinner

  1. Prep something easy like a Marinated Flank Steak and a simple potato salad or even easier, grab a box of pasta, a jar of marinara (Rao’s is my fave!), a rotisserie chicken and a bagged Caesar salad.

  2. This Panzanella is the BEST summer salad.

  3. How about a big batch of Gazpacho or stew or chilli with garlic bread or cornbread?

  4. Guac + Chips + Margaritas

  5. Shandy’s for cocktail hour

Something for Dessert

Once, friends brought over the most divine selection of ‘fancy’ chocolates. They know my Fraser is the biggest chocoholic on the planet and it was the perfect thing to set out after an indulgent meal. No baking required!

But if you have a family specialty that you can offer to bring, that always is a nice way to share family traditions. Bonus points if it includes a seasonal fruit like blueberries or peaches!

Something for the hostess

1) Fancy soaps like Aesop go a long way. I don’t know about you, but I can’t justify buying those kinds of things but I sure do love having them! One thing I do treat myself to is this lovely sustainable cleaning line Guests on Earth (use Lovestory20 for a discount). The products are incredibly effective, smell gorgeous and I like the subtle packaging. Or go for a new candle. You can’t go wrong with that.

2) New pjs - this little sleep dress is adorable. I also love the idea of gifting a beautiful kaftan or beach shirt.

Something for the kids or pets

1) Some new toys or treats for the dog or cat is always appreciated.

2) These kids aprons are simply adorable! Maybe include these inexpensive baking tools.

3) My sisters and I loved these colouring table cloths and place mats to keep the kids busy when we were cooking dinner at the cottage.

4) Card games, board games and puzzles are great ideas that every family loves! We bought this backyard golf game and the kids LOVE it!

PS: Wine and Beer is always a great idea too!

Please share this post with someone who is stuck on a hostess gift idea!
