Salted, Browned Butter Rice Krispie Squares

These are not your average Rice Krispie square. When you add double the butter and brown it up until it gets nutty and delicious, then melt down your marshmallows with an added secret ingredient (ahem….secret is out, it’s sweetened condensed milk!) and then coat every last crispy bit of cereal in that mixture, you’ve created the most life affirming treat.

Salted, Browned Butter Rice Krispie Squares

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup butter

  • 1 bag (285g) marshmallows

  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 8 cups Rice Krispie Cereal

Directions:

  1. Start by preparing your baking dish by buttering it or spraying it with non-stick spray. I also like to line mine with parchment paper.

  2. Then brown the butter in a pot over medium high heat. It will melt, then foam, then turn clear golden and finally start to turn brown and smell nutty. Browned butter is delicious. Burnt butter is decidedly not. Keep an eye on it. Stir frequently, scraping up any bits from the bottom as you do. The period between the time the butter begins to take on colour and the point where it burns is often less than a minute!

  3. Add in the marshmallows and reduce the heat to low, stirring frequently until the marshmallows are all melted. Stir in the sweetened condensed milk.

  4. Remove the pot from the stove and add in the salt and the rice cereal and stir until everything is well coated and combined.

  5. Spread the mixture into your prepared baking dish. It might be helpful to use damp hands to push the mixture tightly into the pan.

  6. Set it aside to cool and get ready to enjoy the best rice krispie treats you’ve ever had!
